About this opening
With 1.e3 White opens the f1-bishop's diagonal but gives up on occupying the center right away: the Van't Kruijs Opening lives mostly on its transpositions, into a Colle System, an English setup, or a reversed Dutch after a later f4. Black settles comfortably in the center with 1...e5 or 1...d5. It is named after Maarten van't Kruijs, a 19th-century player from Amsterdam. A discreet move that sidesteps opening theory, at the cost of a small deficit in initiative.
