About this opening

With 1...c6 followed by 2...d5, Black challenges the center exactly like in the French Defense, but keeps the c8 bishop's diagonal open — the key difference that makes the Caro-Kann one of the most solid replies to 1.e4. Black usually develops the bishop to f5 or g4 before playing ...e6, reaching positions with very few weaknesses. The Classical, Advance and Exchange variations each give the game a distinct character, from quiet maneuvering to sharp opposite-side castling. Karpov and, more recently, Ding Liren made the Caro-Kann a world-championship weapon.
