About this opening

With 3.Bc4, White aims the bishop at f7, the weakest square in Black's camp, while preparing to castle quickly. The game can stay quiet in the Giuoco Piano, where both sides maneuver behind stable pawn chains, or turn sharp after the Evans Gambit and the Two Knights Defense, where White sacrifices material for a fast attack. Played since the 16th century by Greco and revived at top level by Carlsen and Caruana, the Italian Game is the most recommended starting point for learning open positions: every piece develops to a natural square.
