The Modern Variation (2...Nf6) declines to recapture on d5 right away: Black develops the knight first and regains the pawn later, or even sacrifices it temporarily for active play, as in the Portuguese Gambit with ...Bg4. More dynamic than the classical queen line, it aims for rapid development and more open positions, prized by enterprising players.
