About this opening
The Scandinavian Defense (1.e4 d5) challenges the center on the very first move. After 2.exd5, Black recaptures with 2...Qxd5, followed by ...Qa5 or ...Qd6 to reroute the queen, or chooses the more modern 2...Nf6. The opening offers a clear plan and little theory to memorize, making it ideal for players seeking solidity. It earned its stripes when Anand played it against Kasparov in the 1995 World Championship.
