About this opening
With 1.d3 White opens the c1-bishop's diagonal without occupying the center: the Mieses Opening aims mostly at transposition, into a King's Indian Attack after g3 and Bg2, or a reversed Philidor after 1...e5. Named continuations include the Reversed Rat 1...e5 and the Valencia Opening 2.Nd2. It carries the name of Jacques Mieses, one of the very first official grandmasters in 1950. Solid but unambitious, it suits players who prefer a battle of ideas to a theoretical duel.
