About this opening
With 1.g3 White prepares to fianchetto the bishop on g2 before revealing any central plans: the Hungarian Opening controls the long diagonal and often transposes into the King's Indian Attack, the English Opening or a Catalan. Independent continuations include the Sicilian Invitation 1...c5 and the Symmetrical Variation 1...g6. Pal Benko made it famous at the 1962 Curaçao Candidates, beating both Fischer and Tal with this very 1.g3. An ideal way to avoid theory without taking risks.
