About this opening
The Réti Opening embodies the hypermodern school: with 1.Nf3 followed by c4 and a g2 fianchetto, White controls the center from a distance rather than occupying it with pawns. Flexible, it readily transposes into the English or Catalan depending on Black's replies. Richard Réti made it famous by beating Capablanca in New York in 1924, one of the first great hypermodern victories.
