About this opening

The Alapin Variation of the Dutch (1.d4 f5 2.Qd3) brings the queen out very early to d3, intending to prepare e4 and surprise the usual schemes. Developing the queen so soon, however, goes against principle: Black develops with gain of tempo and gets comfortable play. It is a rare, eccentric anti-Dutch, geared more toward surprise than a real advantage.
