About this opening
The Panov Attack (3.exd5 cxd5 4.c4) gives the Caro-Kann a completely different character: White accepts an isolated queen's pawn structure in return for active development and strong central pressure. White's pieces occupy dynamic squares and target the black king, in a spirit close to Queen's Gambit positions. Vasily Panov set out its plans; it is the most aggressive option against the Caro-Kann.
