About this opening
The Classical Variation (4...Bf5) is the very essence of the Caro-Kann: before closing the chain with ...e6, Black develops the light-squared bishop outside, to f5, thereby solving the French's main problem. A sound, weakness-free structure follows, in which Black aims for a solid middlegame and a balanced endgame. It is one of the most reliable defenses against 1.e4.
