About this opening
The Kan Variation is defined by the early ...a6 paired with ...e6, which prevents White's b5 sorties and lets Black develop the pieces with great freedom. This flexible structure, free of lasting weaknesses, allows the knights' placement to be delayed according to the opponent's play. It bears the name of the Soviet master Ilya Kan and remains prized for its balance of safety and counterplay.
