About this opening
By answering 1.e4 with 1...c5, Black immediately unbalances the game: the c-pawn trades itself against White's d-pawn, giving Black a half-open c-file and a long-term central majority. White usually castles short and attacks on the kingside, while Black counter-attacks on the queenside, often with ...a6 and ...b5. The Najdorf, Dragon and Sveshnikov variations are among the most analyzed lines in chess. Fischer and Kasparov made the Sicilian their main weapon against 1.e4, proving that Black can play for a win, not just for equality.
