About this opening
The Petrosian Variation meets ...e5 with the 7.d5 push, which closes the center at once. The game becomes a slow maneuvering battle: White prepares queenside expansion while Black seeks a kingside attack with ...f5. True to his prophylactic style, Tigran Petrosian favored this blockade, which defuses the opponent's counterplay before it can be unleashed.
