About this opening

The Grünfeld Variation (4.Nbd2) blocks the check by interposing the queen's knight rather than the bishop. White thereby keeps the bishop pair intact and prepares e4 or a3 to question the b4 bishop. Black continues with ...O-O, ...d5 or ...b6 as appropriate. It is a flexible answer to the Bogo-Indian that avoids the immediate exchange and keeps more tension in the position.
