Alekhine Defense: Buckley Attack

ECO B02 · Alekhine Defense

The Alekhine Defense: Buckley Attack (B02) is a chess opening in the Alekhine Defense family, played by Black. It arises after the moves 1. e4 Nf6 2. e5 Nd5 3. Na3.

Moves: 1. e4 Nf6 2. e5 Nd5 3. Na3

About this opening

The Buckley Attack (3.Na3) develops the knight to the rim after 2.e5 Nd5, intending to reroute it to c4, where it eyes Black's queenside and the e5 and d6 squares. The a3 square is awkward and costs time, though, and Black gets equal play with classical development. It is a minor line, rarely seen at top level, aimed mainly at taking the opponent out of preparation.
