About this opening
The Meran Variation is the tactical heart of the Semi-Slav: after ...dxc4 and ...b5, Black launches an ambitious queenside expansion, challenging White's center and freeing the c8 bishop. The play quickly turns sharp, rich in pawn sacrifices and central breaks. Appearing at a tournament in Meran in 1924, it remains one of the most contested and theoretical lines of the closed repertoire.
