The Bird Opening (A02) is a tactical chess opening in the Bird Opening family, played by White. It arises after the moves 1. f4. Gambit with 1.f4. Uncommon but aggressive. Recommended for intermediate players.

About this opening
With 1.f4, the Bird Opening immediately grabs kingside space and fights for the e5 square, like a Dutch Defense played a tempo up. White often fianchettoes the bishop to b2 and aims for a kingside attack. From's Gambit (1...e5) and Stonewall or Leningrad structures are its typical continuations. Popularized by Henry Bird in the 19th century, it was later revived by Bent Larsen as a surprise weapon.
