About this opening
By defending d5 with 2...c6 instead of 2...e6, Black keeps the c8 bishop's diagonal open — the same idea that distinguishes the Caro-Kann from the French. The bishop usually develops actively to f5 or g4 before Black closes the structure with ...e6. White must decide between the main line allowing ...dxc4, the Exchange Variation with its symmetrical structure, and the sharp Geller Gambit. The Slav was the cornerstone of Euwe's 1935 world championship victory and remains a favorite of players who want solidity without passivity, including Anand and Kramnik.
