About this opening
The Philidor Defense (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6) is solid but unassuming: Black supports the e5 pawn without committing the knight to c6, keeping a compact structure. The drawback is a lack of space, which must be offset by precise play, often via ...exd4 and the Hanham setup. François-André Danican Philidor, who theorized the strength of pawns in the 18th century, gave it his name.
