About this opening

The London System is less an opening than a complete setup: White plays d4, Nf3, Bf4, e3, c3 and Bd3 in almost any order, against virtually any Black defense. The dark-squared bishop develops outside the pawn chain before e3 closes it in, which is the whole point of the system. Plans are easy to learn — control e5, expand on the kingside, keep the structure solid — which makes the London ideal for players who want positional understanding instead of memorized theory. Kamsky and Carlsen have shown it can be a genuine winning attempt even at elite level.
