About this opening
In the Open Catalan, Black accepts the c4 pawn with ...dxc4 and tries to hold it, at the cost of lagging development against the powerful g2 bishop. White banks on the long-term pressure of the fianchetto along the long diagonal and often regains the pawn with the initiative. It is a typically Catalan fight, between short-term material and lasting positional activity.
